Actor Yuki Matsuzaki is featured in “Bridge,” a play running until Dec. 18 at the Ruby Theatre, 6476 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.
Remaining showtimes are Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-10 and 15-17, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 11 and 18, at 2 p.m. Running time is 90 minutes, with an intermission.
In “Bridge,” an old saxophonist finds what he thinks will be a solitary spot to practice his music in the middle of the night — on a bridge. He finds himself confronted by three disparate souls at different times who also seek the solitude of the bridge with a common purpose — the intent to jump off.
There’s a drug-abusing woman with a terrible secret; a transvestite living with AIDS, who’s been abandoned by his lover; and a Japanese tsunami survivor, stricken with survivor guilt. Will the musician be able to dissuade these three tortured souls from their terrible resolves?
Playwright Willard Manus found the inspiration for his protagonist in legendary jazz musician Sonny Rollins who would practice his saxophone playing on the Williamsburg Bridge at night.
The cast includes William Stanford Davis, Leslie A. Jones, Donald Roman Lopez and Josie Martineaux. Understudies are Chris Carver, Yutaka Takeuchi and Kendra Waldman. Kelly Galindo directs.
Matsuzaki, who plays the tsunami survivor, is a native of Miyazaki who moved to New York after graduating from high school to start his acting career in America. His credits include the movies “The Last Samurai,” “Letters from Iwo Jima,” “The Pink Panther 2” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”; and the TV series “Heroes,” “Better Off Ted,” “Memphis Beat” and “Melissa and Joey.”
Tickets are $25. For reservations, call (323) 960-7740
