From Sata to Soya: A Journey Across Japan
The 22-year-old Josef Nilsen, who is planning to walk the full length of Japan from Cape Sata to Cape Soya, visited the Embassy of Sweden on the day before he took off on his journey. The Swedish Ambassador to Japan, Stefan Noreén, advised him to drop by Japan-Sweden associations in various regions in Japan and cheered his journey starting from March 5. Through the journey, Nilsen hopes to discover more about himself as well as the country he finds most intriguing.
Nilsen first experienced Japanese culture through movies, books and music and was immediately intrigued by the great differences between Japanese and Swedish culture. Religion and technology, salary men and cosplayers - for Nilsen, Japanese culture is a fascinating marriage of old and new.
As his interest grew, he came across the documentary film "Kintaro Walks Japan", an account of Tyler McNiven's journey walking the entire length of Japan in search of his father's birthplace. Inspired by McNiven's experiences, Nilsen saw an opportunity to combine his passion for photography and writing with his interest in Japan.
Over the past year, Nilsen prepared for his trip to Japan, searching for sponsors and contacting adventurers for advice. He improved his physical fitness and wrote and photographed more than ever, all while avidly consuming books and movies about Japan. Throughout the cold Nordic winter he dreamed of spring and cherry blossoms.
The time has come for Nilsen to embark on his journey.
- “I hope this adventure will bring me many new friends and fond memories!“, Nilsen said.
